S/A 247: Methods of Social Research: Sociology Citations

American Sociological Association Style

Proper Citations: All quotes and ideas must be cited correctly in the text. Students are responsible for knowing and using approved format. A failure to cite properly constitutes plagiarism and a violation of the Honor Code. A helpful website is www.noodletools.com or http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/research/r_docsocio.html

The Purdue web site has a nice brief summary of the sociology citation format.  Noodle tools has a feature that allows you to enter the information and they will arrange it into the proper format but you will need to modify the final product to fit the sociology format.

Zotero

Zotero is a free and easy-to-use research tool that helps you collect, organize, and analyze research and lets you share it in a variety of ways. Zotero includes the best parts of older reference manager software — the ability to store author, title, and publication fields and to export that information as formatted references — and the best aspects of modern software and web applications, such as the ability to organize, tag, and search in advanced ways. Zotero interacts seamlessly with online resources: when it senses you are viewing a book, article, or other object on the web, it can automatically extract and save complete bibliographic references. Zotero effortlessly transmits information to and from other web services and applications, and it runs both as a web service and offline on your personal devices.

See the Zotero Quick Start Guide to get started or try our very brief guide; see Jason Puckett's guide for more tips and strategies.

A note for Zotero users - you can set up Zotero to recognize content in our databases by clicking on the gear icon, choosing preferences, clicking on Advanced, and adding under Resolver this URL: http://linksource.ebsco.com/linking.aspx Although the American Sociological Association citation format isn't one of the default options, it is easy to add via the citation preferences function.
