Collection Description

Bergquist, Joseph Emanuel.  Collection of Rev. Joseph E. Bergquist, 1942-1986.  LCA Collection 295.  3 folders.

ABSTRACT:
The Rev. Joseph E. Bergquist collection consists mostly of photographs taken during his time as an Army Chaplain in World War II, along with some obituaries and memorials.  Photos were taken in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany.  There are many photos taken at various concentration camps including, Bergen-Belsen, Buchenwald, Dachau, Nordhausen and the site of the Gardelegen atrocity.  Please be aware that these are unedited historical photographs from the Holocaust that document extreme violence and human suffering.

Biographical Note

Joseph Emanuel Bergquist was born in Peale, Pennsylvania on 24 January 1899.  He graduated from Upsala College, East Orange, New Jersey in 1926, and from Augustana Seminary, Rock Island, Illinois in 1929.  Bergquist was ordained in Rockford, Illinois in 1929 and his first call was Bethesda Lutheran Church in Kenora, Canada.  Throughout his pastoral career he served congregations in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Kansas, Iowa, and Minnesota.  He retired in December 1965 and moved with his wife to St. Peter, Minnesota.

During World War II, Bergquist served as an Army Chaplain from 1942-46 with the 515 Medical Clearing Company, including two years of overseas service.  He attended The Chaplain’s School at Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1942, and later served as the Protestant Port Chaplain in Antwerp, Belgium.

Bergquist married Alphild Evelyn Lawson in 1929, and she passed away in 1941.  In 1944 he married Naime Frances Eckburg, and they had two daughters.  Joseph died in 1985 and Naime in 2002.
