PHI 248 & GWS 248: Gender, Knowledge & Reality: Searching for Books

Where should I browse the shelves?

Books are shelved in general subject categories using the Library of Congress classification system. You may want to supplement your use of the catalog with browsing shelf areas for your topic.

Of course, books related to gender, knowledge, and reality can be found in various classification areas around the library. A few examples:

  • Taking Back Philosophy: A Multicultural Manifesto (General Collection B53 .V28 2017).  B =  Philosophy (General)
  • The Feminist Philosophy Reader (General Collection HQ1190 .B345 2008).  HQ1190 = Women. Feminism.
  • This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color (General Collection PS509.F44 T5 2002).  PS = Collections of American Literature.
  • Beyond Epistemology: A Pragmatist Approach to Feminist Science Studies (General Collection Q130 .C58 2003).  Q = Science (General)

Note: The Library of Congress classification system was "first developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to organize the book collections of the Library of Congress" (Library of Congress Classification) and continues to reflect the bias of that time and place. In addition, terminology within the system does not always keep pace with current usage. Librarians continue to work to rectify this.
