HIS 244: US and World War II: Start

Overview for this assignment, you will research and contribute to a national project on discovering what Americans knew about the Holocaust as it unfolded. The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum recently launched a crowd-sourcing project to uncover what ordinary Americans around the country could have known about the Holocaust from reading their local newspapers in the years 1933–1945. As of this semester, no one has uploaded a newspaper article from Minnesota. Let’s change that!

Searching for Newspapers on Microfilm

To search for local newspapers available on microfilm from the Minnesota Historical Society, please click the following link:  You'll want to make sure you are only searching the MHS catalog and limit the collection to "newspaper microfilm."  Your search page should look like this image.  The only thing left to enter is the name of the newspaper you are searching.

Searching for other Newspapers

It's tough to find full-text and online newspapers after 1922 from the public web.  Most newspapers are in pay-for-access databases. However, there are some options.  Also, the Gustavus Library provides in-house microfilm access to the St. Peter Herald. Talk to a librarian for more information.

Here are some places to look:

Winona Newspaper Project This site has very good keyword searching.

Discover America's Story  Minnesota content on this site is mixed.  There are many towns listed, but there are often only a few dates from the 1933-45 time period.  You'll need to search by date and actually read/scan through the papers to find appropriate articles.

Historical U.S. Newspapers Online: M  This is a great index listing for digitized newspapers in Minnesota (and other states) with papers often dating from the 1933-45 period. Not all links work, but most do. One thing you'll find is that each database has unique search functions, have fun!  Also, while there are many towns/cities and newspapers listed, it's still only a sampling.  Thanks to the librarians at Bowling Green State University for their efforts on this page.
