FTS: Time: Research Activity

Research Activity

In this activity, you'll identify potential sources for your Blast from the Past assignment while you practice navigating and evaluating library resources. Questions? Just ask!

Step 1. Identify a Scholarly Article

Task: Identify one scholarly article about your event.

Things to consider:

  • Where will I search? (Tip: Academic Search Premier is a good place to start).
  • What keywords will I use? (Tip: You might need to revise them!).
  • How can I determine whether the article is scholarly?
  • Will this article provide evidence of the event and factors that caused it?
  • How will I keep track of what I found? Some options:
    • Save the article citation and/or the permalink.
    • Download the article (if available).
    • Request the article using the Find It! button.

Step 2. Identify a Book or Book Chapter

Task: Identify one book or book chapter that discusses your event.

Things to consider:

  • Where will I search? (Tip: Start at the search box on the library home page; limit your results to books)
  • What keywords will I use? (Tip: You might need to revise them!)
  • Will this book/chapter provide evidence of the event and factors that caused it?
  • How will I keep track of what I found? Some options:
    • Save the book/chapter citation.
    • Email the catalog record to yourself.
    • Retrieve the book from the shelves (if available and time allows).
    • Request the book/chapter from another library.
