Online Resources

In addition to books and articles, there are some websites that might be helpful while researching your topic. This page highlights a selection of recommended websites where you can find data about various religions. Remember to ask a librarian if you need assistance finding other options!

Religious Data

  • The Association of Religion Data Archives
    • The ARDA stives to democratize access to data on religion. Their site includes "American and international collections submitted by the foremost religion scholars and research centers in the world." 
  • Pew Research Center
    • A nonpartisan think tank that conducts public opinion polling, demographic research, and other data-driven research on a variety of topics. Their research is mostly conducted from the perspective of United States' citizens.
  • United States Commissions on International Religious Freedom
    • A bipartisan legislative branch agency that monitors "the universal right to freedom of religion or belief abroad." USCIRF keeps a list of victims of religious oppression as well as publishing reports on various countries.  
  • US Religion Census
    • The U.S. Religion Census collects data on the number of congregations, members, adherents, and attendees withing the United States.

Tips

Keep these questions in mind when researching data to help you narrow down what you're looking for and decide which resource to use:

  • What are you trying to measure?
  • Where (geographical) does this data come from?
  • When did this data take place?
  • Who might collect this data?
