Collection Description

Iota Beta Sorority.  Collection of the Iota Beta Sorority, undated and 1941-1967.  GACA Collection 18.  1 flat box.

ABSTRACT:
The Iota Beta Sorority collection consists primarily of invitations and programs for the group’s events between the 1940s and the 1960s.  In addition, there is an informal constitution of an organization listed as the I.B. Society of G.A.C.  This document indicates that members were male although the group’s secretary Dagmar Cassel might have written it in error.  Invitations and programs were created by hand and show a variety of artistic talent and design.  Many of these materials list sorority members and their dates.

Historical Note

According to information compiled by Rose Baumann and printed in winter 2005-06 edition of The Gustavus Quarterly, the Iota Beta Sorority formed “in 1904 as the ‘Independent Blessings,’ the first chartered limited literary society on campus; renamed by 1922 and known familiarly as the “IBs”; inactive after 1968; reorganized in 1980 but inactive again after 1988.”
