Collection Description

Newspaper Collection of The Student Opinion, 21 November 1942.  GACA Collection 354.  1 folder.

ABSTRACT:
The Student Opinion was published on 21 November 1942 in response to the Gustavus Adolphus College Board of Trustees decision to ban intercollegiate athletics for the duration of World War II.  The Board reached its decision without informing or consulting with the athletic board, the faculty, or the athletic department.  After the decision was announced during a chapel service, student unrest ignited.  The student body met with the Student Senate that evening, and this news sheet was printed in order to publicize the students’ position.  In addition to student opinion, comments from St. Peter residents and alumni were included.  The Board of Trustees rescinded their original decision within a few weeks and intercollegiate athletics were reinstated at Gustavus.
