Basset, Gene.  Editorial Cartoons by Gene Basset, 1964-2005.  SCRB Collection 15.  61 flat boxes and 17 3-ring binders.

The Gene Basset Editorial Cartoon collection consists of thousands of ink drawings, pencil sketches, negatives, and newspaper clippings created from 1964 through 2005.  The cartoons cover varying subjects including sports, politics, international issues, and local Georgia and Atlanta issues.  Basset was the chief editorial cartoonist with Scripps Howard newspapers from the early 1960s to the early 1980s.  In 1972, the United Feature Syndicate also syndicated his work.  In 1982, Basset began working for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, where he worked until his retirement in 1992.

Biographical Note

Gene Basset was born 24 July 1927 in Brooklyn, New York.  Basset served in the United States Coast Guard from 1944-46, after which he studied at the University of Missouri, Cooper Union, Brooklyn College, the Art Students League, and Pratt Institute.  He has degrees in both art and psychology.

During Basset’s career he drew for the Indianapolis Times, the Brooklyn Eagle, the Boston Post, the Honolulu Star Bulletin, Scripps Howard newspapers, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.  He was a member of the National Cartoonists Society and the American Association of Editorial Cartoonists.  He also taught art at the Famous Artists School in Westport, Connecticut from 1957-1962.  As of 2016, Gene Basset is living in St. Peter, Minnesota.

Scope and Content

Cartoons, 1964- are numbered consecutively by year. This index includes the subjects of the cartoons along with the number of sketches (sk.), proofs (pr.), negatives (ng.), drawings (dr.), and watercolors (wc.) for each cartoon. 

3-ring Binders, 1982-1992 contains newspapers clippings of the cartoons organized by date of publication.
