Book Search Activity Instructions (see also the handout)

 

  1. Search for your book in the library catalog (the search box on the library’s home page). Click on the title to view the detailed record for the book.
     
  2. Write down the collection (example: General Collection) and the call number (example: BQ7935.B777 A3 1990)
     
  3. Write down the “Subject Headings” listed under “Library of Congress Subject Headings” (example: “Quality of life”)
     
  4. Locate your book on the shelves. Write down what you notice about the other books that surround it.
     
  5. Bring your book back to the classroom and skim through it. What approach does the author (or authors) take to issues related to “the good life”? In other words, from what discipline (or area of study) do you think the author approaches “the good life”?

Think about your possible major or a subject that you’re interested in (academically and/or personally). What terms or topics come to mind when you think about how “The Good Life” might be defined through that lens?
