Collection Description

Womyn’s Awareness Center.  Heterodoxy, 1989-Ongoing.  GACA Collection 38.  1 Hollinger box.

ABSTRACT:
The Womyn’s Awareness Center collection consists of copies of Heterodoxy, “a student-run, feminist women’s journal” published on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College.  Heterodoxy’s early issues were monthly while gaps have occurred more recently.  Originally, the publication’s editors “attempt[ed] to coordinate the efforts of feminist students, faculty and staff members on campus.”  Since its inception in 1989, focus changed from providing commentary about women’s issues to being a publication vehicle for student poems, artwork, and personal essays.

Organization Note

“The Womyn's Awareness Center is a designated safe place for womyn and men interested in womyn's issues to think, discuss, argue, laugh, and freely be themselves.  It also serves as a resource center for feminist, reproductive rights, justice, queer, and various other issues.  The Gustavus Womyn's Awareness center is affiliated with the Feminist Majority Foundation.  The Womyn's Awareness Center events for women's history month, National Young Women's Day of Action, the Roe v. Wade Anniversary, Celebration of Women, sponsoring [sic] speakiners [sic], acrivist [sic] activities, and teaching the Gustavus community about reproductive rights, sexual assault, and safe sexuality.  The Womyn's Awareness center also has ties with Minnesota NARAL though internships.”
