Lundin, Carl E. and Inet (Holcombe). Gustavus Memorabilia of Carl E. and Inet (Holcombe) Lundin, 1918-1960. GACA Collection 480. 2 flat boxes and 1 hat box.
ABSTRACT:
The Carl E. and Inet (Holcombe) Lundin collection contains Gustavus memorabilia from their time as students at Gustavus from 1918-1922. Memorabilia consists of their graduation caps, a black Gustavus sweater, a Gustavus scarf, and individual scrapbooks for both Inet Holcombe and Carl E. Lundin. Holcombe and Lundin were students at Gustavus from 1918 through 1922. Both scrapbooks use the same template, beginning with pages where information can be written in, followed by pages where photographs and memorabilia can be attached, and a pocket in the back where other items can be stored.
The Carl E. Lundin scrapbook contains photos and memorabilia from the years of 1918 through 1922. Photographs include images of his friends and of hikes. Memorabilia consists of pamphlets from events on campus, letters, restaurant menus, class schedules, and door decorations. Some memorabilia specifically mentions the Lyric Male Chorus, Schumann Lyric Chorus, ROTC, and Nu Upsilon Gamma groups.
The Inet Holcombe scrapbook fills out much of the scrapbook’s template pages. Templates note her friends’ information including birthdays and addresses; basketball, baseball, and football games; performances of theater and music; and various social gatherings. The latter half of the book leaves room for inserting photographs or paper mementos. These pages are full of notes and letters from friends, invitations to parties, song books, church programs, dormitory door decorations, drawings, and even her undergraduate thesis. Holcombe included small trinkets such as bottle caps, matches, flowers, and candles in addition to the paper materials. Photos in her scrapbook feature campus buildings, sports teams, and various outdoor excursions with friends. Items from the Iota Beta sorority and Schumann Ladies’ Chorus appear repeatedly.
Carl E. Lundin and Inet Holcombe were both born in 1900. They married in 1926, and had two sons, John Frederick, and Carl “Dave” David. Their son, Carl D. Lundin was born in 1931 and went to Gustavus from 1949 through 1951. The collection also contains some items from him, including cartoon of his father, a note about his mother, a Homecoming brochure, and an Omega Kappa fraternity ribbon.
Not all material dates to their time at Gustavus Adolphus College. Some materials have dates through 1960. Most items are undated and could be after their time at the college as well.
