Collection Description

Hemlandet, det Gamla och det Nya, 1855-1914.  LCA Collection 97.  35 microfilm reels.

ABSTRACT:
Hemlandet, det Gamla och det Nya (The Homeland, the Old and the New) absorbed the periodical Minnesota Posten.  It was considered one of the most influential and widely read Swedish language publications in America, serving the rapidly growing immigrant population.  Content consisted generally of church news and devotional material.  By 1857 the focus of the paper had shifted to political matters, gradually becoming secularized to align with the attitudes of the Augustana Synod.  Hemlandet merged with political rival Svenska Amerikanaren in 1914 to form Svenska Amerikanaren och Hemlandet.
