Hammarberg, Melvin A.  Papers of Reverend Dr. Melvin Hammarberg, 1937-1994.  LCA Collection 116.  1 Records Center Carton and 1 flat box.

ABSTRACT:
The Reverend Dr. Melvin Hammarberg collection contains professional and personal documents such as sermons, prayers, articles, programs, and correspondence of his and Ruth, his wife.  In addition, there are photographs and books that Hammarberg created for Lent.  During his ministerial career, Hammarberg served on the Board of Trustees at Gustavus Adolphus College, directed World Missions at Augustana Lutheran Church, and was President of the Minnesota Synod of the Lutheran Church in America from 1965-76.

Biographical Note

Melvin Hammarberg graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota during 1934 and from Augustana Seminary in Rock Island, Illinois in 1937.  He then served at Bethany Lutheran Church in Des Moines, Iowa, Arlington Hills Lutheran Church, and Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in St. Paul, Minnesota.  He served on the Board of Trustees at Gustavus, was director of World Missions at Augustana Lutheran Church, and was President of the Minnesota Synod of LCA from 1965-76.  Hammarberg died from cancer one day before his official resignation date in 1976.  The Palindrome sculptural fountain west of Christ Chapel at Gustavus was created by Paul Granlund in memory of Hammarberg.
