EAS/RUS 253: Vampires in Russian & East European Cultures: Searching for Sources by Language

Limit by Language: General Tips

  • Searching for a word in a different language can sometimes be a good way to start identifying sources in that language.
  • If you find an academic source in your language of interest, check the bibliography for other relevant sources (articles, books, etc.) written in that language.
  • Consult our research guides for resources related to your topic and language of interest.
  • Search Google for credible sites (such as academic library collections) with links to materials in your language of interest. Remember that access to some material will be restricted to students at the hosting institution. Two examples:
  • Ask your professor if they can suggest specific sources.
  • Ask a librarian for assistance.

Limit by Language: Specific Databases

Many search tools allow you to limit your results to materials written in a specific language.

Library catalogs

  • In the Gustavus Library Catalog, you can do a basic search from the library homepage, then limit the results by language. Or you can use the advanced search option and limit by language before you enter your search terms.
  • In WorldCat.org, you can search the catalogs of libraries across the US, then limit your results by language.

Academic sources

  • Some EBSCO databases such as Academic Search Premier (academic journals and popular magazines) and MLA International Bibliography (academic journals with a focus on literature) give you the option to limit your results by language before or after you enter your search terms.
  • In Google Scholar, you can limit search results by language by clicking the three lines at the top right of the screen, clicking Settings, clicking Language, then selecting an option under "For search results."
  • In JSTOR (academic journals), you can limit your search by language using the drop-down menu.

News sources

  • In Access World News (news articles), you can filter your results by a particular language my using the language limiter on the bottom of the left column. Be patient as this database can be slow to load.
