Collection Development Policy - Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library: Gifts to the Library Collections

Gifts to the Library Collections

We are grateful for the consideration shown by donors to our library.  The library will accept gifts of material on a limited basis, entirely at the discretion of library faculty.  Because of constraints on staffing, space, and the need to maintain currency in our collections, donations can only be accepted under certain conditions:

  1. Usually, the donor must be a member of the Gustavus Community, e.g., retiring faculty.
  2. The items to be donated are appropriate in subject matter to the disciplines taught on campus, are recent publications or of distinct historical value, e.g., special collections.
  3. Material donated cannot be returned to the donor.
  4. Prior approval for the acceptance of a donation must be received from the library.

All donated items are managed at the discretion of the library faculty and staff who will determine appropriateness of subject, condition of the individual items, whether any individual item will be added to the collection, and disposal of the items as we see fit, including selling or recycling.
The donor predetermines the value of an item, i.e., the library will not appraise the value of material donated.
