Finding Leisure Reading: Afrofuturism

Overview

Afrofuturism is a cultural and artistic movement that blends science fiction, fantasy, history, and Black diasporic experiences to imagine futures shaped by Black people and cultures. It challenges dominant narratives by centering Black perspectives and exploring themes of liberation, technology, identity, and possibility. Afrofuturism appears in music, visual arts, fashion and film, in addition to literature, envisioning worlds where Black creativity and innovation shape the future. Our library intentionally collects a wide range of Afrofuturism authors.

The list is far from comprehensive; search the library catalog for more books or reach out to us for recommendations. Search tip: Put "African and Diasporic Speculative Fiction" in the library catalog search box; some items have this tag as a local note in the catalog record and you'll find them this way. If you have books you'd like to recommend that we purchase, please send them our way.
