About the Paper Crane
The origami paper crane is a symbol of peace, rooted in the story of Hiroshima bombing survivor Sadako Sasaki. The children's book Sadako and The Thousand Paper Cranes by Eleanor Coerr (1977) tells her story. Sadako's classmates helped create the Children's Peace Monument in Hiroshima Peace Park to recognize war's horrific impacts on children. The Peace Crane Project promotes world peace and the UN's International Day of Peace.
Peace, Justice & Conflict Studies (PJCS) is an interdisciplinary field of study which addresses the problems of war, social oppression and violence, and the challenges of implementing nonviolent conflict resolution and social justice. In 2024, we celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the PJCS program at Gustavus, one of the oldest peace studies programs in the world!
