Interlibrary Loan: FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

When will it get here?

  • Borrowed materials like books and videos take an average of 7 days. Try to plan ahead as much as possible - there are things outside our control that affect how quickly items get here.

  • Copies of articles and chapters average 48 hours. Filling out as many fields as you can when submitting a request will get your material here faster!

How will I know it's here?

You'll get an email with instructions for picking up borrowed materials or how to download copies.

How long can I keep it?

  • Borrowed materials can be kept for a minimum of 2 weeks.
    • Most libraries allow you to ask for renewals (extensions to your loan), which can be done via your online account a few days before the due date. Look for a renewal link in email reminders. We're happy to help you with the renewal process.
  • Articles and chapters, once you download them, are yours to keep forever.

Other Helpful Information

  • The library absorbs costs associated with ILLs, so it's free to you!
  • Requests are always processed immediately and sent using the fastest method.
  • Filling in as many fields as possible in the request form will allow for automated processing, getting your material into your hands faster.
  • If there's something specific about your request you want us to know, use the notes field to add a message.
  • If we are unable to obtain something for you via ILL, we always provide an explanation.
  • Some materials are difficult or impossible to obtain via ILL. They include:
    • ebooks
    • rare books and manuscripts (things that reside in Archives or Special collections)
    • entire issues of magazines or journals
    • conference presentations or posters
    • some dissertations or theses
We don't recommend relying on ILL for all your textbooks and required readings, but contact us if you have questions about a specific item.
  • In the rare case your ILL is lost or damaged while on loan to you, we'll work on your behalf with the lending library to address the situation.
  • ILL is for recreational use, too! However, books and movies in high demand might not be immediately available via ILL. Instead, visit the St. Peter Public Library to inquire about waiting lists for these items. The public library is close by and welcomes the Gustavus community!
