A Guide to English: Programming

What it is:

Hypertext Markup Language, invented in the early 1990s by CERN researcher Tim Berners-Lee in order to enable fellow researchers to more easily navigate the connected web using a system of hyperlinks that communicate between the user's browser and the server that hosts the website.
