J M Barrie wrote Peter Pan first as a work of prose and then adapted it for the stage. Banks was the first of a group of UK writers who introduced a note of whimsy and political realism into the space opera genre, remaking it into something quite a bit more sophisticated than Golden Age stories in the genre. Banks also wrote straight literary fiction as Iain Banks; he was the sort of author who would start a novel with a line like: "It was the day my grandmother exploded."
